Travelling A Long Way For A First Meeting
Distance turns a first date into a committed trip, which distorts the decision at both ends, and there are ways to structure it so neither person is trapped.

Where two people live several hours apart, a first meeting stops being an evening and becomes a journey. That changes the decision structure for both of them.
Sunk cost distorts the evening
Somebody who has spent a day travelling has invested enough that leaving after an hour feels wasteful, even when leaving is the right response to how it is going.
The same pressure applies to the host, who feels responsible for the visitor's journey being worthwhile and therefore extends an evening that has already answered its question.
Both effects push towards staying longer than the meeting warrants, which is the opposite of what a first date should allow.
Accommodation is the decision to make in advance
Staying at somebody's home on a first meeting removes the ability to leave, which is the single most useful property a first date has.
Booking somewhere separate, even when it is offered otherwise, keeps that option open. It can be given up freely later; it cannot easily be recovered on the night.
Where cost is the obstacle, a day trip with a fixed return is the alternative, and the return time being already booked does the same job.
Preliminary contact does more work at distance
A video call before travelling is standard practice for long-distance first meetings, because the cost of discovering a basic mismatch on arrival is much higher.
It also establishes something about pace and manner that messages do not carry, which matters more when the meeting cannot be kept short.
Somebody unwilling to speak on camera before a journey of several hours is declining a reasonable request, and that refusal is itself information.
Structure the visit as several short things
A single long block is the hardest format. Two or three shorter arrangements with gaps between them gives both people intervals to reset and a natural point to stop.
Gaps also let a visitor do something independently, which removes the sense of being hosted continuously and takes pressure off the person doing the hosting.
Agreeing the shape beforehand is easier than improvising it, because improvising requires one person to propose an ending.
The safety arrangements are the same but matter more
Telling somebody where you are going, when you expect to return and who you are meeting is the ordinary precaution, and unfamiliar surroundings make it more relevant rather than less.
Independent means of getting home, and enough money to change plans, are the practical version of that. Both are cheap to arrange and difficult to improvise.
Where a trip crosses a border, the additional considerations are documentation and access to a working phone, and those requirements vary by country and change over time.
Questions readers ask
Is an activity date better than drinks?
It removes the interview dynamic and shows behaviour rather than answers. It works best when it is short, cheap and requires no skill from either of you.
What about the cinema?
It postpones the conversation for two hours, so it works better as a second or third date than as a first meeting.
