First Dates
What A First Date Cannot Tell You
A first meeting reliably reveals manner, attention and ease, and reveals almost nothing about reliability, conflict or values, which is why confident early judgements age badly.

First dates are asked to answer questions they are structurally incapable of answering. Knowing which questions those are prevents a great deal of misplaced certainty.
What the format does show
An hour with somebody reliably demonstrates manner, attention, humour and whether being in their company is comfortable. All of these are visible immediately and are difficult to fake for long.
How somebody treats other people present is similarly available, and it is one of the few pieces of unguarded information a first meeting supplies.
These are real findings. They are also almost entirely about the present moment rather than about how somebody behaves over months.
Reliability cannot appear yet
Reliability is a pattern across many small occasions, and a first date contains one. Arriving on time once is compatible with any degree of dependability.
The same applies to generosity, patience and effort, all of which are easy to display briefly and expensive to sustain. A single evening cannot distinguish the two.
This is why enthusiastic early assessments so often reverse. The trait being assessed was not observable in the sample available.
Conflict behaviour is entirely hidden
Nothing on a first date creates a disagreement worth having, so how somebody handles being contradicted, disappointed or inconvenienced remains unknown.
That is the single most predictive thing about a long relationship, and it is not available until something actually goes wrong, which typically takes months.
Small frictions, a delayed order or a change of plan, offer a partial preview, but they are far milder than what is being predicted from them.
Attraction on a first meeting is unstable
Physical arousal from nerves, novelty and alcohol is difficult to distinguish from attraction, and all three are at their maximum on a first meeting.
Attraction also moves substantially with familiarity in both directions, which is why a lukewarm first impression is a weak basis for a decision either way.
The more useful reading is curiosity: whether there is something you want to know more about. That is stable in a way the immediate response is not.
Using the format for what it is good at
Treating a first meeting as a screen rather than an assessment matches its capabilities. It filters out mismatches quickly and confirms very little.
That reframing lowers the stakes considerably, which improves the evening itself, since much of what makes first dates difficult is the weight placed on their conclusion.
It also argues for deciding on second meetings generously and on serious commitments slowly, because the information required for the second arrives much later than people expect.
Questions readers ask
Is an activity date better than drinks?
It removes the interview dynamic and shows behaviour rather than answers. It works best when it is short, cheap and requires no skill from either of you.
What about the cinema?
It postpones the conversation for two hours, so it works better as a second or third date than as a first meeting.
